When The Best Is The Worst
"Betrayal at its worst" was the title of one editorial article from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper Friday July 7-06. Rarely you see a newspaper editorial criticizing prison officials or "a prison system out of control", but the abuses inside our prisons are so egregious that the media cannot keep a blind eye toward prison abuse any longer. The article talks about the guilty plea of Mr. James Crosby, a former Florida prison chief and another prison official Allen Clark for taking bribes (kick backs) from vending company Keefee that provided commissary for prisoners and from another company running a separate canteen for prison visitors (prisoner's families). The article also said: "state investigators also have charged 8 others in connection with stealing recycling material from the agency or using inmate labor for personal projects".
This news may be new to the society but not to us (prisoners). Almost every prisoner in this country federal, state and county knows about Keefee products and how the products sold in prison commissary are sometimes expired and/or marked "not for sale" but we pay full price for it with the pennies per hour that we make from our slave labor; with no right to exchange and/or reimburse our money. We also know how our family is cheated by the high prices of the food they sell to our visitors. We also know that prison officials not only steal recycling material, they also steal/destroy and/or misuse prison's factory materials and even government properties; and what about using inmate labor for personal projects? I will not have enough paper to state all the examples of this abuse.
Reading about Mr. Crosby's crime a week after the Tallahassee Gunfight and reading the May issue of Prison Legal News was very devastating for me. It took me a few days to recovery. I keep asking myself: "when will the abuse stop?"; "How far is this going to go?"; "will the society open its eyes on time?"; "what can I do"?; "How can I help my sons?". I read from the Prison Legal News that: - Janice Koonte and Colleen Jordan, two employees of the Arkansas Department of Corrections, used prisoner's social security numbers obtained from their job to fraudulently file false income tax returns in the name of the prisoners; - Major Joseph Glynn Jr. the deputy warden of the Philadelphia Prison system, embezzled money from the inmate accounts. And what about Robert, a severely mentally disabled teenager, and an orphan with the mind of an infant who is a 15-year old that wears diapers and plays with blocks. Guards in Robert's Tallahassee juvenile detention center were unable to care for him. Their solution: they assigned a 17-year-old accused violator to bathe, clothe, and change Robert's diaper. Robert was repeatedly raped. - More and more cases of sexual abuse to inmates, juveniles and females, brutality, medical neglect, etc, etc.
But the article that shocked me the most was about Dominick Labruzzi, a captain at Riker's Island juvenile jail that sexually assaulted several teenage boys under his custody. All the victims were "young spanish kids, no facial hair, curly black hair, very innocent looking...". I said to myself: "Oh Lord please keep my boys be safe and out of trouble". I feel sorry for the mothers of those boys and girls that are sexually or physically abused inside our prisons. The majority of those teenagers enter prison due to addiction or mental problems and the family can not afford to send them for treatments.
At the beginning of my incarceration while my sons were visiting me, an officer opened the children's play room (to count us) and my youngest son was behind the door. When the officer brutally opened the door, my son fell on the floor, and another officer told him: "you hit the kid"; the officer's reply was: "that's ok, he will get use to it because he will end up in prison like his mother and he will pay for my son's college by securing me a job". I could not say anything (I am not allowed to). I lifted my son off the floor. He was just over one year old and he was crying. I held him against my heart and I said to him: "I promise you that I will do whatever I can to save you from prison. This unkind human will eat his words". Everytime that I read about the abuses in our juvenile prisons I remember that day.
Sexual, physical and mental abuse; slave labor; stealing our money; our social security; robbing us and our families through high phone rates and food prices; medical neglect; no religious or freedom of speech; killing agents; suicides; cover-ups; brutality; and much more. I wonder what is next?. The Orlando Sentinel Editorial said that the corrupt government officials owed an apology to the Florida citizens; however the editorial does not mention the apology also owed to the prisoners and their families. When the best law-abiding citizens who we trusted to rehabilate criminals are the worst criminals; we can honestly say that: WHEN THE BEST IS THE WORST,WE ARE ALL LOST. "Betrayal at its worst" is not enough.

So what you are saying is we should not hold him to the same standards as what we hold every other criminal to??? Just because he held a job in corrections? He is just as capable of being a criminal as any of the rest of them and just because they are criminals does not mean anyone has the right to victimize them. And it is not like we are talking about just one or two accusations here... we are talking about SEVERAL... alot harder to refute that...

I'm with the truth... EIGHT inmates accused this man of sexual misconduct... and these are not men, they are children, regardless of their criminal status... this is not ONE person accusing him, it's EIGHT. Also, a thorough investigation was completed before charges were filed, because, as you are well aware, when any member of the corrections department is accused of such crimes, the investigation is much more thorough before charges are filed than if it were an ordinary citizen, as the media frenzy caused brings a very negative light on the state, city, county, and/or federal institution involved for having allowed such an atrocity. I'm with the truth... if he's guilty, he should be punished severely... even more severely than an ordinary citizen, because in his position he was expected to be a role model of sorts... he should be held to a higher standard. And just because the people he is accused of hurting are considered criminals themselves (which, by the way, it is possible that any one or more of those boys were innocent of any crimes themselves as Riker's juvenile detention area holds inmates waiting for trial or serving sentences that are less than a year in length-- hardly hardened criminals)does not make them any less human than you or I... they still have a reasonable expectation to not suffer such atrocities, especially from an adult who is supposed to be taking care of them.

As I said, I am with the truth. So, I will be interested to see what the trial brings out. And calling me a dirty slut whore is only childish. If the man is innocent, by all means, I hope he is vindicated, but if he is guilty, then he should fry. Nowhere did I say that those boys were innocent... I said they COULD be... and where are you getting your facts about just what the 8 accusers did or are pleading guilty to? If that information is public, please post a link, because I have found no identifying information on them. Please cite your sources for the info you are posting.
If the man is innocent, I feel awful for him because whether he is found innocent or not, he is branded. If the investigators are as inept as you say, and are the cause of false indictments, THEY should be in prison... better yet, they should have to work to pay the salaries of the people's lives they have ruined for the rest of what would be their working days, because with charges of a sexual nature, legal or not, it will affect their abilities to get jobs for the rest of their lives, and those investigators should be the ones to pay for that.

Hey Steffi, that is quite nice of you but I doubt that Dominick's legal team would want to try this case in the papers or in the court of public opinion. What I have been telling you and printing on this blog is very accurate and if Dominick was to find out who was leaking out his defense stagedy, i do not think he would consider me his friend. However what is on this blog is oinly the tip of the ice berg.
I will say this, I will email you in time, but not as of yet. Here is some more questionable activity I ask you to look into, why would DOI put in there press release, that they wanted to thank "especially the memebrs of the Correction Captains union for their part in the investigation." No captain was interviewed in this investigation. What they were refering to is that the captains union sold Dominick up the river, but they never did. They were always behind him. Further more what DOI was ingaging in, was a basic form of UNION BUSTING, which is a major labor relation offense. DOI was using and specifically singled out the CCA in there press release just because of the hate relationship between Meringolo and Caruso. Caruso was the corrupt DOI Inspector General who was finally fired. Look at all the DOI press releases over the years, How come Dominick's case is the only case in which they thank a Union for there cooperation?
more questions to be answered, how come after the intial arrest of dominick on jan 31, 2006, the bronx da, waited another 4 months to have him re arrested on another charge. he was re arrested on may 23, 2006. all the same bullshit charges. this was done to humiliate him and to force him to plea bargin. but he did not accept the da's plea, by the way if he did do what they are accusing him of he would of jumped all over the plea which was a real sweetheart deal. dominick is set on clearing his name!. i'm behind you.
The more I hear, the more I agree with you... from this blog, you can see that I am an advocate for people who are wrongly accused and or convicted of a crime. I am interested in setting up a page backing Dominick and refuting the charges against him, but I need some help. I got one better than that. A former Deputy Warden in the NYC DOC named Ed Gavin warned Sara Wallace,from ABC news, not to go with this story. She was told that there are many facts to this case that just does not add up, so on and so forth. Ed was tipped off from his friends that are still serving in the department. Ed Gavin knew Dominick and the type of person that he was. He also served in the Investigation Unit, during his time with DOC and was quite familar with dishonest fabricated stories from inmates. Ed Gavin has a place in DOC history also with Sara Wallace, see Ed Gavin and Robert Cripps a Deputy Warden in DOC who is still active, exposed with Sara Wallace, the scandle with Anthony Serra. Serra was a chief who had Correction Officers work on his private house while they were on city time. This news story broke about 4 years ago. Serra is now serving time for his crime. However back to the Dominick bullshit, Ed Gavon and Roberts Cripps spoke about this and Cripps promised Gavin that this was all bullshit, and to tell Sara she got it all wrong. Ed called Sara and Sara agreed not to run the story. She agreed but approximately 8 days later, decided to go with the story. Now how come Cripps is a big part of this story, see Cripps was and still is, as of 10/01/06, the Deputy Warden of the adolesent jail on Rikers. So did Cripps leak the story to Wallace, or is he a stand up guy like Ed Gavin told his friends who are still in DOC. Or is Gavin full of crap. Ed to this day still says that Cripps is a stand up guy. Also word on Rikes say Cripps is a non-player. It is strange that Cripps, Gavin and Wallace are all intermingled in this story also. Some real big players in DOC are really worried if Dominick take this to trial. Steffi and to the people who are reading this I tell you there is still more to come.
why the two different emails steffi?
I actually have about ten different emails... I use the msn and a couple of my verizon accounts the most. I wouldn't even have the msn or yahoo or any other web based email accounts if I didn't need them for passport and messenger accounts. Different emails just means that I gave one one time and another a different time. Use either one... I don't care. I like the verizon one because I can download my email into Outlook, but the msn account is easily accessed anywhere. I can access my verizon from the web too, as long as my computer is not still on and had downloaded the messages. As I said, use either one... I prefer the verizon I suppose, but whatever your little heart desires.
Sara Wallace is a terrible reporter. She Rathered the news instead of gathering the news. Thats right folks she graduated with honors from the Dan Rather school of Reporting, refering to the fact that Dan Rather believed fake documents about President Bush, just how Sara believed scum bag inmates about this case. Just on the fact that the inmates changed there stories on the average of 3 times should be enough to see that they are lying, but in NY a white cop is guilty until proven innocent. Gotta love liberal NY.

A NYC CORRECTION OFFICER WAS CHARGED WITH RAPING A FEMALE INMATE 2 YEARS AGO. HE WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY THIS MONTH. CONGRATS TO THE DEFENSE TEAM FOR MR REYES. having attended some of the court dates for mr labruzzi, i can tell you the courts will clear his name, he has been offered a plea to admit to a minor infraction having nothing to do with the accusations, if he were guilty and the case against him was stong why give him the option to plea? the accusers are long time repeat perps who mysteriously made bail after serving months with no bail after the accusations, also one of the accusers made the same allegations about a former inmate, when the statements from the accusers are read in court it will be very easy to see labruzzi was framed by the system who did not like a young white male who made captain so quickly, i will be attending every trial date to support mr labruzzi. i hope the accusers dont live or commit felonies in your neighborhood as they are repeat offenders with nothing to lose and all to gain from accusing mr labruzzi
oh yes there is a big jealousy factor within the NYCDOC, espically with the other ethnic groups. See when a white boy rises through the ranks quickly, it creates a hostile work place with the animals. How come the passing grade for the NYC DOC Captain's test was a 30. thats right it was a 30, not a 70. but the fire department passing grade for there promotion test is a 90. oh thats right that the fire department is over 95 percent white while the correction department is 85 percent minority. WOW!!!! now thats news
yes and dominick was in the top ten percent, actually one of the last few who legally passed the test, the was # 70 on a list of 731 names. he city had to curve the test and make the passing grade a 32, because of the city's affirmative action policy and quoter policy. sad that all these unqualified people will have this investigative and supervisory power. where the outrage from sara wallace. oh thats right dom is white. so i guess he is guilty
from what i hear the d.a. is not too thrilled with how the judge ruled in the case so far. things are looking like dominic will get a fair trial after all.
Ok let me identify myself, I have had the opportunity to know Dominic Labruzzi for over 15 years. This is nothing more than the irresistible force meeting the immoveable object. Ladies and gentleman Mr. Dominic La bruzzi is that immovable object. I knew Dominick when he was suppose to be down for the count only to score a late round knock out. All I can say is Commissioner Horn and DOC have never encounted a person like Dominic who will fight for his name all the way till death if need be. the only difference with the duke case and dominick's case is that dominic is in nyc. if this was north carolina dominick would never have to go through this hell. but what do you expect from a black racist d.a. of the bronx.
according the sources close to the case the DA has dropped all the serious charges againist Dominick and will most likely proceed with only B misdemeanors. if convicted he faced up to 90 days in jail. that right 90 days. all this drama for nothing. like i said before the DA's case is bullshit and is falling apart.

Here is a case of one of the worst crimes to never occur. I can not even begin to tell you the amount of bullshit the Judge will have to sought through. There is more evidence that Dominick killed President Kennedy then there is of him committing these crimes. It has been over two years since his arrest and the District Attorney keeps stalling, stalling and stalling. The District Attorney even has gone as far and dropped all the "A" misdemeanors in this case which carry the most severe sentence and opted to procede with only "B" misdemeanors. The "B" Misdemeanors carry a sentence of only 90 days in jail. The DA felt they would have a better chance in front of a judge then a Bronx Hispanic jury. Yea I know something is really wrong here. Last I checked Dominick is a white guy, and he is accused of sexually abusing nine hispanic male inmates, and the DA feels that they could not convince a Hispanic jury that he was guilty. Question: why would numerous DOC personnel lie to investigators about Captain LaBruzzi, when he had only been at the facility a few weeks maybe months, and never set foot in the place before..? It was alledged that once he knew they were investigating the allegations, he asked intake personnel to claim that he had infact taken these individuals to the intake area to be strip- searched ( they are logged out to to intake, escorted by Captain LaBruzzi by the housing area officers )but they never arrived...where or where were they "stripped searched"..?? And Yes, he is a very strange bird...no girlfriend or wife, living at mom and dad's house, not very well liked as an officer, always thought of as "scared" and somewhat of a loner. Makes you wonder why he, with his "connections" in the dept. from his Brownosing, would volunteer to work in ARDC, when no one else would...and then volunteer to work the Adolescent Housing areas steady, when no one else would...and take them on the 3 to 11 tour, when no one else would...?? Did the promotion now give him "super powers" that he never displayed as an officer..?? What was his agenda...??

THEY LOSE THE LOG BOOKS!!!. GOOD ONE!!!. now we have missing inmates, missing log books, missing statements, and a missing case!!. see you at the aquittal!!!

ok folks. the case is finally over. All the sex abuse charges were dropped by Bronx ADA Militano. It appears that it was physically impossible for Dominick to sexually abuse any inmates on his days off from work or to be sexually abusing two seperate inmates at the same time in two different places of a jail which covers a half a mile of space or to be in an area where he had no access to and even though there was cameras in the area where the alleged crime took place, the DA claims that they were not working at the time. (Yea ok) And when it was time for trial, any and all evidence that could of cleared Dominick of any wrong doing such as Department log books and video tape evidence, officer testimony and so on have disappeared. Even with all this, Judge Seth Marvin a Mayor Bloomberg Appointee, did not have the guts to dismiss the case. He had the authority to dismiss the case but he ordered to proceed to trial and the people have enough evidece to proceed. AMAZING!!!! As you can see the word of an individual is far stronger than any physical or hard evidence to clear a person of wrong doing. Sad!!!! Any who through a long plea bargin, in which the DA was pushing for, the DA agreed to drop all 31 sex abuse charges as UNFOUNDED! and Dominick agreed to plea guilty to one charge of endangering the welfare of a minor. This was because he conducted an unauthorized investigation pertaining to officer coruption which endangered the lives of inmates and fellow staff members. This was a violation of department rules and regulations. (this would have been a tough one for him to beat in an administrative hearing where he could of been fired and loose his pension)While he felt he was doing the correct thing, the Inspector Generals office took two years to investigate what Dominick discovered in two weeks!! However as part of the plea agreement he is not allowed to speak about the findings of his investigation which are documented somewhere in the files of the inspector generals office never to be unlocked ever. See Dominick had no authority to cover such an investigation. This type of investigation should of been handled by the inspector generals office, the same office which investigated the sex abuse case of Dominick. However two years of coruption was taking place and the inspector generals office decided it was more important to play politics then to stop the coruption. Dominick decided to to take matters into his own hands to stop coruption but in the end paid with his career! As part of the plea agreement Dominick was allowed to retire with his pension of 9 years, face no jail time, and retire in good standing with the department. This is a sad ending to a career for an individual who gave his uniform everything and in return got screwed by a system that wanted to protect the department of coruption oh im sorry correction

After the Da looked at the case with Facts that Dom's legal team presented, the Da decided to drop all the sex related charges against Dom. The Da stated that since Dominick overstepped his bounds and started a criminal investigation pertaining to officer misconduct and corruption he endangered the lives of fellow officers and the inmates. "This is one of (if not) the BEST banana cake I have ever tasted! I thought the oven temp of 275° sounded a little low, but this cake baked up (and rose) beautifully in my oven at this temp after pretty much exactly one hour. I do not know if the little "freezer trick" to this recipe is what ensured its moistness or not, but I did it, and it was exceptionally moist & delicious. Would be interesting to see if it still came out as great if this step was skipped. All I know is that I followed this recipe EXACTLY as stated (except that I had no buttermilk, so I subbed with a mix of lemon juice & milk) and I got exceptional results. So moist and yummy...a dense cake, similar in texture to a carrot cake... I personally would not call this frosted banana bread :o) Depending on the amount of frosting you like you can decide whether to half the recipe or not. I used the full recipe and had some leftover. I sprinkled on the chopped walnuts and threw this baby in the fridge and cut it the next day...TO DIE FOR! I really liked it slightly chilled, but great at room temp too! It got better each day it sat, I always make this cake at least the day before I need or want it. I was extremely pleased with this cake and will be making it over & over again!! 1 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups icing sugar
Garnish
chopped walnuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 275°.
Grease and flour a 9 x 13 pan.
In a small bowl, mix mashed banana with the lemon juice; set aside.
In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.

Remove from oven and place directly into the freezer for 45 minutes. This will make the cake very moist.
For the frosting, cream the butter and cream cheese until smooth.
Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Add icing sugar and beat on low speed until combined, then on high speed until frosting is smooth.
Spread on cooled cake.
Sprinkle chopped walnuts over top of the frosting, if desired.
